In 1973 he made his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in the small role of Fiorello in The Barber of Seville. Very soon they began to entrust him with central roles. After performances in German theaters in Wiesbaden, Dortmund, Lübeck, Hamburg, Cologne, he conquered the international stage. He was applauded by the audience of the theaters “La Monnaie” in Brussels, “Liceu” in Barcelona, ”Colon” in Buenos Aires, “Megaron” in Athens, “Chatelet” in Paris, Staatsoper in Vienna. In 1996, he made his first appearance at Milan’s La Scala in Rheingold d’Or under Riccardo Muti. His repertoire was very wide and included characters from Mozart’s operas, German operas from Beethoven to Berg, Italian operas, among which he preferred Verdi. Kapellmann also sang in operas by Puccini and Richard Strauss. Unforgettable was his interpretation of the role of Creon in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex.
