Debut 1884 (Antwerp). In 1887 he performed the part of Lohengrin at the French premiere of the opera in Paris. In 1888 he sang Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival. In 1888-98 he was a soloist of the Vienna Opera, where he participated in the world premiere of Werther (title role). He performed at the Metropolitan Opera (1898-1902, debut as Tannhäuser). He sang on the stage of Covent Garden from 1891, was an entrepreneur in the German troupe of this theater (1907). He became famous as the leading performer of Wagner’s parts (Siegfried in Der Ring des Nibelungen, Tristan, etc.). Toured in Russia (since 1900). He gave concerts.
