Master of buffoon roles, especially in Rossini’s operas. Debut 1966 (Reggio nel Emilia, Dulcamara in Donizetti’s Love Potion). He sang in most of the leading Italian theaters (Rome, Genoa, Milan, Naples). Since 1970 at La Scala (debut as Bartolo). He sang with success at the Vienna Opera from 1981 (parts of Bartolo, Dandini in Rossini’s Cinderella, Taddeo in his own “Italian in Algiers”). Since 1982, the Metropolitan Opera (debut in his best part – Bartolo). Among the performances of the last years of the role of Don Magnifico in Cinderella (1994, Bavarian Opera), Bartolo (1996, Arena di Verona). Other parts of Gaudenzio in Rossini’s Signor Bruschino and Don Pasquale in Donizetti’s opera of the same name. Among the recordings of the part are Bartolo (conducted by Abbado, Deutsche Grammophon), Dulcamara (conducted by Levine, Deutsche Grammophon).
