Barbara Bonney
Arriving in 1977 to study in Salzburg, she remained in Europe. Debut 1979 (Darmstadt, the part of Anna in Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor). Here she performed in the parts of Blondchen in Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio, Cherubino, Manon. In 1983-84 she sang on the stages of Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, since 1984 in Covent Garden (debut as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier). Since 1985 at La Scala (Pamina and other parties), since 1989 at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Naiad in Ariadne auf Naxos by R. Strauss). Bonnie is one of the leading contemporary singers. Among the performances of recent years, the role of Nanette in Falstaff (1996, Met). Other roles include Susanna, Mikaela, and the Young Girl in Schoenberg’s Moses and Aaron. Among the recordings are Mozart’s parts (Servilia in The Mercy of Titus, dir. Hogwood, L’Oiseau-Lyre; Zerlina in Don Giovanni, dir. Harnoncourt, Teldec) and a number of others.
