Debut 1949 (Dresden). From 1952 he sang regularly at the Bayreuth Festival (parts of Hans Sachs and Pogner in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger Nuremberg, Gurnemanz in Parsifal). Since 1957 he has been a soloist with the German State Opera. In Covent Garden since 1967 (Wotan in Valkyrie). He made his debut in 1969 at the Metropolitan Opera (Hans Sachs). He often performed at the Salzburg Festival, performed the parts of Moses in Schoenberg’s Moses and Aaron (1987), Schigolch in Berg’s Lulu (1995) and others. Participated in the world premieres of the operas Einstein by Dessau (Berlin, 1972), Berio’s The King Listens (1984, Salzburg Festival). Other roles include Wozzeck in Berg’s opera of the same name, Leporello, Baron Ochs in The Rosenkavalier. He also performed works by Schreker, Krenek, Einem. Among the recordings of Wotan’s part in “Valkyrie” and “Siegfried” (conductor Yanovsky, Eurodisc), Baron Oks (conductor Böhm, Deutsche Grammophon) and others.
