Teresa Stolz
She made her debut in 1857 in Tiflis (as part of an Italian troupe). In 1863 she successfully performed the part of Matilda in William Tell (Bologna). From 1865 she performed at La Scala. At the suggestion of Verdi, in 1867 she performed the part of Elizabeth in the Italian premiere of Don Carlos in Bologna. Received recognition as one of the best Verdi singers. On stage, La Scala sang the parts of Leonora in The Force of Destiny (1869, premiere of the 2nd edition), Aida (1871, 1st production at La Scala, directed by the author). Participated in the world premiere of Verdi’s Requiem (1874, Milan). Other roles include Alice in Meyerbeer’s Robert the Devil, Rachel in Halevi’s Zhidovka. Stolz is one of the greatest singers of the 19th century.
