1) An interval in the volume of six steps of music. scale; denoted by the number 6. Differ: large S. (b. 6), containing 41/2 tones, small S. (m. 6) – 4 tones, reduced S. (d. 6) – 31/2 tones, increased S. (uv. 6) – 5 tones. S. belongs to the number of simple intervals not exceeding an octave; small and large S. are diatonic. intervals, since they are formed from the steps of diatonic. mode and turn into major and minor thirds, respectively; the rest of the S. are chromatic.
2) Harmonic double sound, formed by sounds located at a distance of six steps.
