Italian by nationality. She performed in a cabaret with her sister. At the invitation of Caruso, she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1918 (the role of Leonora in Verdi’s The Force of Destiny), she sang here until 1936 (among the roles of Rachel in Halevi’s Zhidovka, Elizabeth in Don Carlos, Norma, Louise Miller in Verdi’s opera of the same name, Julia in Spontini’s Vestal and others). In 1929-31 she performed at Covent Garden, toured on other major stages in the world (Florence, Chicago).
Poncelle is one of the greatest singers of the first half of the 1937th century. She left the stage in 1982. Conducted teaching activities (among the students of Seals, Milnes, Morris). After her death, the singer’s memoirs (XNUMX) were published. Recordings include the part of Violetta (conducted by Panis, Pearl) and others.
