She made her debut in 1952 (Savona, part of Violetta). Since 1953 she has performed on the stage of the Nuovo Theater (Milan). Since 1954 at La Scala (debut as Walter in Catalani’s Valli). In 1956 she successfully performed the part of Micaela (Venice). She has performed since 1957 in London (parts of Mimi and Adina in L’elisir d’amore, etc.). Huge success accompanied the singer at the Edinburgh Festival in 1957, where she replaced Callas in the part of Amina in “Sleepwalker”. Since 1965 at the Metropolitan Opera (debut in the title role in Madama Butterfly), where she performed until 1987 (among the parts of Lucia, Leonora in Il trovatore, Elizabeth in Don Carlos, Desdemona).
She sang in Munich, Berlin, Chicago (since 1960, debut as Mimi), repeatedly performed at the Arena di Verona festival (1964-81). In 1964 she toured Moscow with La Scala. Scotto’s repertoire also included dramatic roles, such as Norma, Lady Macbeth, Gioconda in Ponchielli’s opera of the same name). In 1992, she first sang the part of the Marshall in Les Cavaliers de la Rose (Catania), in 1993 she performed in the mono-opera The Human Voice by Poulenc at the Florentine Musical May festival. In 1997 she performed with a chamber program in Moscow.
Renata Scotto is an outstanding singer of the XNUMXth century. Recordings include Cio-Cio-san (conductor Barbirolli, EMI), Adriana Lecouvreur in Cilea’s opera of the same name (conductor Levine, Sony), Madeleine in Andre Chenier (conductor Levine, RCA Victor), Liu (conductor Molinari-Pradeli, EMI ) and many others.
