Debut 1918 (Bamberg). He sang in a number of German theaters, in 1928-32 at the Berlin Opera, from 1935 at the Vienna Opera. From 1928 he performed at the Bayreuth Festival (the part of Gurnemanz in Parsifal, etc.). Since 1932, he has repeatedly sung at Covent Garden (debut as Hagen in The Death of the Gods) and the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Hagen in The Death of the Gods). Successfully participated in the Salzburg Festival (Pizarro in Fidelio, Osmin in Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio, the title role in Le nozze di Figaro). In the post-war years, he sang in various musical theaters in Europe. In 1953 he participated in the world premiere of Einem’s opera The Trial (Salzburg Festival). He recorded a number of Wagnerian parts in Lohengrin, Tristan and Isolde, Parsifal.
