He made his debut in 1961 (Gera, the part of Don Fernando in Fidelio). He sang in Dresden, Weimar and other cities (parts of Scarpia, Alfio in Rural Honour, Tonio in Pagliacci, Jokanaan in Salome, etc.). He sang the roles of Kaspar in The Free Shooter (1985, at the opening of the restored Dresden Opera), Kurvenal in Tristan and Isolde at the Bayreuth Festival (1986). In 1990 he sang Alberich in Der Ring des Nibelungen at Covent Garden. Performed it at the Metropolitan Opera and Chicago (1993). Recorded it with conductor Levine (Deutsche Grammophon). Other recordings include Pizarro’s part in Fidelio (conductor Haitink, Philips).
