Julian Rakhlin is a violinist, violist, conductor, one of the most famous musicians of our time. For more than a quarter of a century, it has captivated listeners all over the world with its luxurious sound, impeccable musicality, and outstanding interpretations of classical and contemporary music.
Julian Rakhlin was born in 1974 in Lithuania into a family of musicians (father is a cellist, mother is a pianist). In 1978, the family emigrated from the USSR and moved to Vienna. Rakhlin studied at the Vienna Conservatory with the famous teacher Boris Kushnir and took private lessons from Pinchas Zukerman.
Having won the prestigious Young Musician of the Year award at the Eurovision Song Contest in Amsterdam in 1988, Rakhlin became world famous. He became the youngest soloist in the history of the Vienna Philharmonic. His debut performance with this group was conducted by Riccardo Muti. Since then, his partners have been the best orchestras and conductors.
Rakhlin has established himself as a remarkable violist and conductor. Taking up the viola on the advice of P. Zuckerman, he began his career as a violist with the performance of Haydn’s quartets. Today Rakhlin’s repertoire includes all major solo and chamber compositions written for viola.
Since his debut as a conductor in 1998, Julian Rachlin has collaborated with orchestras such as the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the Copenhagen Philharmonic, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Tonkunstlerorchestre, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Czech and Israeli Philharmonic Orchestras , Orchestra of Italian Switzerland, Moscow Virtuosos, English Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Orchestras of Zurich and Lausanne, Camerata Salzburg, Bremen German Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra.
Julian Rahlin is the Artistic Director of the Julian Rahlin and Friends Festival in Dubrovnik (Croatia).
Leading contemporary composers write new compositions especially for Julian Rakhlin: Krzysztof Penderecki (Chaconne), Richard Dubunion (piano trio Dubrovnik and Violiana Sonata), Gia Kancheli (Chiaroscuro – Chiaroscuro for viola, piano, percussion, bass guitar) and strings). K. Penderecki’s Double Concerto for violin and viola and orchestra is dedicated to Rakhlin. The musician performed the viola part at the world premiere of this work in 2012 at the Vienna Musikverein with Janine Jansen and the Bavarian Radio Orchestra conducted by Maris Jansons. and in 2013 participated in the Asian premiere of the Double Concerto at the Beijing Music Festival.
The musician’s discography includes recordings for Sony Classical, Warner Classics and Deutsche Grammophon.
Julian Rakhlin has earned worldwide respect and recognition for his philanthropic work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and for his achievements in the field of pedagogy. Since September 1999 he has been teaching at the Vienna University Conservatory.
In the 2014-2015 season Julian Rachlin was artist-in-residence at the Vienna Musikverein. In the 2015-2016 season – artist-in-residence of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (as a soloist and conductor) and the National Orchestra of France, with whom he gave concerts under the baton of Daniel Gatti in Europe and North America. He also played with the La Scala Philharmonic under Riccardo Chailly, the Bavarian Radio Orchestra and Mariss Jansons at the Lucerne Festival, toured Germany with the Grand Symphony Orchestra. P.I. Tchaikovsky and Vladimir Fedoseev, made his debut at the Edinburgh Festival with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Herbert Bloomstedt.
The musician spent his first season as Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Northern Sinfonia Orchestra. During the season he conducted the Moscow Virtuosos, the Dusseldorf Symphony, Rio’s Petrobras Symphony (Brazil), the Philharmonic Orchestras of Nice, Prague, Israel and Slovenia.
Rakhlin performed chamber concerts in Amsterdam, Bologna, New York and Montreal in duets with pianists Itamar Golan and Magda Amara; in Paris and Essen as part of a trio with Evgeny Kissin and Misha Maisky.
In the 2016-2017 season Julian Rakhlin has already given concerts at the Stars on Baikal festival in Irkutsk (chamber evening with Denis Matsuev and a concert with the Tyumen Symphony Orchestra), Karlsruhe (Germany), Zabrze (Poland, Double Concerto for violin and viola by K. Penderetsky, conducted author), Great Barington, Miami, Greenvale and New York (USA), with solo concerts with Itamar Golan in St. Petersburg at the Silver Lyre Festival and with D. Matsuev in Vienna.
As a soloist and conductor, Rakhlin has performed with the Antalya Symphony Orchestra (Turkey), the Royal Northern Sinfonia Orchestra (UK), the Lucerne Festival String Orchestra, and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra (Finland).
The musician’s immediate plans include a concert with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in Tel Aviv and with the Symphony Orchestra of the Balearic Islands in Palma de Mallorca (Spain), performance as a conductor and soloist with the Royal Northern Sinfonia in Goetsheide (UK), the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra and Trondheim Symphony Orchestra (Norway), chamber music concert in Gstaad (Switzerland).
Julian Rachlin plays the violin “ex Liebig” Stradivarius (1704), kindly provided to him by the private fund of Countess Angelica Prokop, and the viola Guadanini (1757), provided by the Fondation del Gesù (Liechtenstein).
