Joseph Marx
Austrian composer and music critic. Studied art history and philosophy at the University of Graz. In 1914-1924 he taught music theory and composition at the Vienna Academy of Music. In 1925-27 rector of the Higher School of Music in Vienna.
In 1927-30 he taught composition in the educational institutions of Ankara. Served with musical critical articles.
Wide recognition was brought to Marx by songs for voice and piano (about 150 in total), written under the influence of X. Wolf and partly by the French impressionists. Among the highest achievements of Marx is the vocal cycle with the orchestra “The Enlightened Year” (“Verklärtes Jahr”, 1932). Defining his creative style, Marx called himself a “romantic realist”.
Marx’s orchestral compositions devoted to recreating pictures of nature are noted for the mastery of musical color: “Autumn Symphony” (1922), “Spring Music” (1925), “Northern Rhapsody” (“Nordland”, 1929), “Autumn Holiday” (1945), ” Castelli romani” for piano and orchestra (1931), as well as “Spring Sonata” for violin and piano (1948), some choirs. A subtle sense of stylization was shown by Marx in the Romantic Concerto for piano and orchestra (1920), the Old Viennese Serenades for orchestra (1942), the string quartets In Antique Style (1938), In Classical Style (1941) and others.
Among Marx’s disciples are I. N. David and A. Melichar. Honorary Professor at the University of Graz (1947). Honorary Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. President of the Austrian Union of Composers.
