Debut 1942 (Hollywood). Performed in operetta. Since 1943 in San Francisco. In 1949 Böhm invited him to the Vienna Opera (Amonasro). In 1950 he performed the part of Figaro (Mozart) at the Glyndebourne Festival. Since 1951 at the Metropolitan Opera. He became famous as an outstanding performer of Wagnerian parts at the Bayreuth Festival, where he performed from 1951 (the parts of Amfortas in Parsifal, the title part in The Flying Dutchman, etc.). He performed the part of Mandryka at the American premiere of “Arabella” by R. Strauss (1951, Metropolitan Opera). From 1952 he sang at the Salzburg Festival. In 1960 he performed at the Bolshoi Theater (part of Boris Godunov).
Among the parties are also Eugene Onegin, Count Almaviva, Scarpia, Escamillo and others. Since 1971 he has been acting as an opera director. Of the productions, we note “Ring of the Nibelung” (1973-75, Seattle). Recordings include Don Giovanni (conductor R. Moralt, Philips), Wotan in The Valkyrie (conductor Leinsdorf, Decca).
