Debut 1968 in Budapest (the party of the Queen of Shemakhan). In 1972-77 she sang in Frankfurt am Main, simultaneously performing on various stages in Europe. Since 1978 at La Scala (debut as Leonora in Il trovatore). She successfully performed the part of the Empress in R. Strauss’s Woman without a Shadow (1979) at the Colon Theatre. In the same role she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera (1981). Here she also sang the parts of Ortrud in Lohengrin, Mona Lisa in the opera of the same name by Ponchielli, Tosca. Since 1987 he has been performing at Covent Garden (debut as Turandot). In 1992 she performed the role of the Dyer’s Wife in “Woman Without a Shadow” at the Salzburg Festival.
Other roles include Madeleine in André Chénier, Leonora in Verdi’s The Force of Destiny, Tatiana, Brunhilde in Der Ring des Nibelungen. In 1995 she performed the part of Turandot (one of the best in the repertoire) at the Arena di Verona festival. Recordings include the title roles in the operas Turandot (conductor Abbado, RCA Victor), Valli (conductor Steinberg, Eurodisc), Gioconda (conductor A. Fischer, Virgin Vision).
