Dmitri Hvorostovsky
The world famous Russian baritone Dmitry Hvorostovsky was born and studied in Krasnoyarsk. In 1985-1990 he worked at the Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre. In 1987 he won the 1st prize at the All-Union Competition of Singers. M. I. Glinka, in 1988 – Grand Prix at the International Singing Competition in Toulouse (France).
In 1989 he won the prestigious Singer of the World competition in Cardiff, UK. His European operatic debut was in Nice (The Queen of Spades by Tchaikovsky). Hvorostovsky’s career developed rapidly, and now he regularly performs on the leading stages of the world – at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (London), the Metropolitan Opera (New York), Opera Bastille and Chatelet (Paris), the Bavarian State Opera ( Munich), Milan’s La Scala, the Vienna State Opera and the Chicago Lyric Opera, as well as at major international festivals.
Dmitry Hvorostovsky often and with great success gives solo concerts in such famous halls as Wigmore Hall (London), Queens Hall (Edinburgh), Carnegie Hall (New York), La Scala Theater (Milan), the Grand Hall of the Moscow conservatories, the Liceu Theater (Barcelona), Suntory Hall (Tokyo) and the Vienna Musikverein. He also gave concerts in Istanbul, Jerusalem, the cities of Australia, South America and the countries of the Far East.
He regularly sings with orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony and Rotterdam Philharmonic. Conductors he has worked with include James Levine, Bernard Haitink, Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Yuri Temirkanov and Valery Gergiev. For Dmitri Hvorostovsky and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Giya Kancheli wrote the symphonic work Do Not Cry, which premiered in San Francisco in May 2002. Especially for Hvorostovsky, the outstanding Russian composer Georgy Sviridov wrote the vocal cycle “Petersburg”; the singer often includes this cycle and other works by Sviridov in his concert programs.
Dmitry continues to maintain close musical and personal ties with Russia. In May 2004, he was the first Russian opera singer to give a solo concert with an orchestra and choir on Red Square in Moscow; TV broadcast of this concert could be seen by viewers from more than 25 countries. In 2005, at the invitation of President Putin, Dmitry Hvorostovsky made a historic tour of the cities of Russia, performing in front of hundreds of thousands of people a program in memory of the soldiers of the Second World War. In addition to Moscow and St. Petersburg, he visited Krasnoyarsk, Samara, Omsk, Kazan, Novosibirsk and Kemerovo. Dmitry makes tours around the cities of Russia every year.
Hvorostovsky’s numerous recordings include discs of romances and opera arias released under the Philips Classics and Delos Records labels, as well as several complete operas on CD and DVD. Hvorostovsky starred in the film “Don Juan without a mask”, made on the basis of Mozart’s opera “Don Juan” (released by Rhombus Media).
PS Dmitry Hvorostovsky died on November 22, 2017 in London. His name was given to the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre.
