Founder of the Brazilian National Opera School. For a number of years he lived in Italy, where the premieres of some of his compositions took place. The most famous among them are “Guarani” (1870, Milan, La Scala, libretto by Scalvini based on the novel of the same name by J. Alencar about the conquest of Brazil by the Portuguese colonialists), “Salvator Rosa” (1874, Genoa, libretto by Gislanzoni), “Slave” (1889, Rio – de Janeiro, libretto by R. Paravicini).

Gomez’s operas were very popular at the beginning of the 1879th century. Arias from his works were included in the repertoires of Caruso, Muzio, Chaliapin, Destinova and others. Guarani was staged in Russia (including at the Bolshoi Theater, 1994). Interest in his work continues to this day. In XNUMX, the opera “Guarani” was staged in Bonn with the participation of Domingo.
