Until 1951 he performed as a baritone. Debut 1947 (Catania, the part of Schonar in La bohème). Tenor debut 1951 (Bari, title role in André Chénier). At La Scala since 1953, at the Metropolitan Opera since 1956 (debut as Radamès). Since 1962, he performed successfully at Covent Garden (Alvaro in Verdi’s The Force of Destiny, Manrico, Cavaradossi, Richard in Masquerade Ball, etc.). Bergonzi also performed roles in operas by contemporary Italian composers (L. Rocchi, Pizzetti, J. Napoli). Toured in Moscow with La Scala (1964). In 1972 he performed the part of Radames at the Wiesbaden Festival together with Obraztsova (Amneris). Among the performances of recent years, the role of Edgar in “Lucia di Lammermoor” on the stage of the Vienna Opera (1988). In 1992 he ended his career.

Many recordings include the role of Cavaradossi with Callas in the title role (conductor Prétre, EMI), Verdi’s parts of Jacopo in the opera The Two Foscari (conductor Giulini, Fonitcetra), Ernani in the opera of the same name (conductor Schippers, RCA Victor) and others.
