Russian composer and vocal teacher. For a long time he lived in Italy (his operas “Rienzi”, “Consuelo”, etc. were not without success here). In 1865 he returned to Russia, where he taught at the conservatory (Moscow) and in 1872 opened singing courses. In Russia he wrote the operas The Thunderstorm (1867, Moscow, based on the play of the same name by Ostrovsky) and Taras Bulba (1887, Moscow, based on the novel by Gogol). Both were staged at the Bolshoi Theatre.
