He studied with R. Statkowski at the Warsaw Conservatory (1923-25), took lessons from K. Szymanowski, and also from A. Roussel in Paris. Organized the Society of Young Polish. musicians in Paris, was its first chairman (1926-30). From 1931 he led in Poland decomp. music about-you, as well as the Union of Polish. composers (1945-47), then its Warsaw branch. In 1936-39 director of the Conservatory in Torun. Participated in the organization of the Higher Music. school (1944), headed by the State. Philharmonic (1946-51) in Krakow, was the director of the muses. department in the Ministry of Culture and Arts (1945). He taught composition at higher musical institutions. schools – in Wroclaw (1951-53) and Warsaw (1947-51, 1955-72; from 1958 professor, in 1964-71 head of the department). P.’s style was influenced by Shimanovsky (works from the folklore period of his work). Prod. P. lyric. warehouse, close to the music of romantics, distinguished by the brightness of the melody, simplicity of texture, rigor and clarity of form. Repeatedly visited the USSR.

Compositions: radio opera Garlands (Girlandy, 1961); ballets; Heroic cantata (Kantata bohaterska, with a reader, 1962); for orc. – Dramatic Symphony (1963), Geometric Suite (Suita geometryczna, 1966); nocturne (1955); concerts with orc. – for fp., for skr., for vlch .; chamber-instr. ensembles; op. for fp.; choirs; songs; music for radio and films.
