He made his debut in Milan (“La Traviata”). From 1920 he lived in the USA. Artistic director of the Chicago Opera from 1944-46. Italian repertoire specialist. His recording of “Valli” by Catalani (soloists Tebaldi, Del Monaco, Cappuccili, Decca) gained great fame. From 1950 he performed at the Metropolitan Opera (in the Italian repertoire). He died suddenly during the performance of Orpheus and Eurydice by Gluck in Athens.
