Rafael Kubelik
Debut in 1934. Was chief conductor of the Brno Opera House (1939-41). In 1948 he performed Don Giovanni at the Edinburgh Festival. In 1950-53 he was the leader of the Chicago orchestra. In 1955-58 music director of Covent Garden. Here he staged the first productions in England of Jenufa by Janáček (1956), Berlioz’s dilogy Les Troyens (1957). Musical director of the Metropolitan Opera from 1973-74.
Kubelik is the author of a number of operas, symphonic and chamber compositions. In 1990 he returned to his homeland. Recordings include Rigoletto (soloists Fischer-Dieskau, Scotto, Bergonzi, Vinko, Simionato, Deutsche Grammophon), Weber’s Oberon (soloists D. Groub, Nilsson, Domingo, Prey and others, Deutsche Grammophon).
