Michael Gielen
Austrian conductor and composer, of German origin, son of the famous director J. Gielen (1890-1968) – participant in the world premieres of the operas “Arabella” and “The Silent Woman” by R. Strauss. In 1951-60 he performed at the Vienna Opera, in 1960-65 he was chief conductor of the Royal Opera of Stockholm. 1st performer of B. Zimmermann’s opera “Soldiers” (1965, Cologne), in 1977-87 chief conductor of the Frankfurt Opera. He staged here (together with director Berghaus) Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio (1982), Berlioz’s Les Troyens (1983) and others. He performed with orchestras in Cincinnati (1980-86), Baden-Baden (since 1986). Since 1987 he has been directing the Mozarteum Orchestra (Salzburg). Gielen’s repertoire includes mainly works by composers of the 20th century. (Schoenberg, Lieberman, Reiman, Ligeti, etc.). Recordings include “Moses and Aaron” by Schoenberg (Philips).
