Italian, lit. – slowly; French lent, lentement
The designation of a tempo close to largo, but not associated with the fullness and special weight of sounds characteristic of the latter. Quite often, music in lento tempo gives the impression of a slow, unhurried, internally inhibited unfolding of images. The understanding of the term was not uniform: J. J. Rousseau (1767) considered lento as a French. analogue of largo. Although the designation lento occurs from the beginning. 17th century, it was generally used and is used relatively rarely (F. Chopin, waltz a-moll, op. 34, No 2).
