Kurt Sanderling
Active member of the German Academy of Arts in Berlin. He began his musical career in 1931 as a corporator at the Berlin City Opera. In 1933 he left Germany. From 1936 assistant conductor, in 1937-41 conductor of the orchestra of the All-Union Radio Committee in Moscow. Since 1941, conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra; for 19 years he worked together with the head of the orchestra, E. A. Mravinsky. In 1960 he headed the Berlin City Symphony Orchestra (now the Berlin Symphony Orchestra). Simultaneously (1964-1967) chief conductor of the Dresden Staatskapelle. Repeatedly performed (including at the head of the orchestra led by him) in various countries of the world.
Sanderling’s art of conducting is distinguished by strictness of style, energy, dynamic development of musical thought, naturalness of emotions, and precise thoughtfulness of artistic tasks. Sanderling is a subtle interpreter of the German classics; an ardent propagandist of D. D. Shostakovich’s symphonic work abroad. In 1956 Sanderling was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR. National Prize of the GDR (1962).
