Debut 1981 (Savonlinna, Donna Anna part). Since 1983 she sang in Helsinki, in the same year she performed in the USA (Washington). Since 1986 in Covent Garden (debut as Fiordiligi in “That’s what everyone does”). In 1988 she sang at the Vienna Opera as Emma in Schubert’s Fierabras. In 1990 she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera (the part of Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni), here she successfully performed the part of Eve in Wagner’s Die Meistersingers Nuremberg (1993), and a number of other parts. In 1996 she sang the role of Elizabeth in Don Carlos (Chatelet Theatre, Covent Garden). In 1997, Mattila sang in “Opera-Bastille” with the Danish baritone Skofhus in “The Merry Widow” by F. Lehar (on New Year’s Eve the performance was broadcast on television in Europe). Recordings include Donna Elvira (conductor Marriner, Philips), Countess Almaviva (conductor Meta, Sony).
