Irmgard Seefried
German singer (soprano). Debut 1940 (Aachen, in “Aida”). Since 1943 at the Vienna Opera (debut as Eve in The Nuremberg Mastersingers. From 1946 she successfully performed at the Salzburg Festival. She sang at Covent Garden (from 1947) and La Scala (from 1949). In 1953 she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera (Suzanne) She sang on the opera stage until 1976 (Vienna Opera, the part of Katya Kabanova in Janacek’s opera of the same name. Among the roles are also Pamina, Fiordiligi in “Everybody Does It So”, Composer in “Ariadne auf Naxos” by R. Strauss, Maria in “Wozzeck” by Berg etc. Brilliant performer of chamber-vocal music, including recordings of Susanna (dir. Frichai, DG), Agatha in “Free Shooter” (dir. Jochum, DG).
