She started out as a chorus girl at the Amsterdam Opera. A sensational success was caused by her performance in 1963 in the same place as the Queen of the Night. She also sang it at Covent Garden, the Vienna Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. In 1974 she sang the role of Helena in Verdi’s Sicilian Vespers at the Metropolitan Opera at the opening of the season. In 1983 she sang the role of Lucia at the Deutsche Staatsoper, and in 1984 in Amsterdam she performed the part of Elvira in Bellini’s Le Puritani. Other roles include Norma, Giselda in the opera Lombards in the First Crusade by Verdi. Among the recordings of the Queen of the Night (dir. Solti, Decca), Lucia (dir. Franchi, Butterfly Music).
