Alexey Chernov
Alexey Chernov was born in 1982 in a family of musicians. In 2000 he graduated from the Central Music School at the Moscow Conservatory with a degree in piano (class of Professor N.V. Trull) and composition (class of Professor L.B. Bobylev). In the same year he entered the Moscow Conservatory at the piano department in the class of Professor N.V. Trull, continuing to engage in optional composition.
In the academic seasons of 2003-2004 and 2004-2005, he was awarded a special nominal scholarship from the Federal Agency for Culture of the Russian Federation. Also, while studying at the Moscow Conservatory, he received a special scholarship from the Russian Performing Arts Foundation.
In 2005 he graduated from the piano department of the Moscow Conservatory with honors, in 2008 he completed his postgraduate studies. He continued his studies at the Royal College of Music in London in the class of Vanessa Latarche, where in 2010 he completed his postgraduate studies, and in 2011 – the highest course for performers “Artist diploma in performance”.
Since 2006 he has been a teacher at the Central Music School at the Moscow Conservatory. Since October 2015 he has also been working at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. P. I. Tchaikovsky.
While still a student at the Central Music School, he became a laureate of the youth competition “Classic Heritage” (Moscow, 1995), a diploma winner of the International Youth Competition in Ettlingen (Germany, 1996) and a laureate of the International Competition “Classica Nova” (Germany, 1997).
In 1997 he became the winner and was awarded the title of laureate of the scholarship named after A.N. Scriabin at the competition of young pianists for the best performance of Scriabin’s works, held annually at the State Memorial Museum of A.N. Scriabin in Moscow. Since then, he regularly takes part in Scriabin’s music festivals in Moscow and other Russian cities, as well as in Paris and Berlin.
In 1998 he received an invitation from Mikhail Pletnev to perform Sergei Prokofiev’s First Concerto, which he brilliantly played together with the Russian National Orchestra in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. Then he became a scholarship holder of the Department of Culture and Leisure of the Central Administrative District of Moscow. In 2002, he became a diploma winner and the owner of a special prize at the A.N. Scriabin.
A. Chernov is a laureate of more than two dozen major international piano competitions, including: Vianna da Motta International Piano Competition (Lisbon, 2001), UNISA International Piano Competition (Pretoria, 2004), International Piano Competition Minsk-2005 “(Minsk, 2005), International Piano Competition “Parnassos 2006” (Monterrey, 2006), Competition in memory of Emil Gilels (Odessa, 2006), IV International Competition named after A.N. Scriabin (Moscow, 2008), “Muse” International Piano Competition (Santorini, 2008), “Spanish composers” International Piano Competition (Las Rozas, Madrid, 2009), Jean Francais Competition (Vanves, Paris, 2010), “Valsessia musica” International Piano Competition (Varalo, 2010), “Campillos” International Piano Competition (Campilles, 2010), “Maria Canals” International Piano Competition (Barcelona, 2011), “Cleveland” International Piano Competition (Cleveland, 2011), XXVII Ettore Pozzoli International Piano Competition (Seregno, 2011). In June 2011 he became a laureate of the XIV International P.I. Tchaikovsky in Moscow.
The pianist has an extensive repertoire of different styles, which includes a significant number of piano concertos. Performs regularly. Collaborated with conductors M. Pletnev, R. Martynov, A. Sladkovsky, A. Anisimov, V. Sirenko, D. Yablonsky, I. Verbitsky, E. Batiz (Mexico) and others.
As a composer, Alexei Chernov is the author of a number of compositions of various forms and genres. Piano music occupies the largest share in his composer’s work, but attention is also paid to chamber and symphonic compositions. Alexey Chernov often includes his piano compositions in chamber and solo concert programs. Collaborates with various composer organizations, and his compositions are successfully performed at contemporary music festivals. In 2002, A. Chernov became a diploma winner and the owner of a special prize at the A. N. Scriabin Composers Competition.
Since 2017, Alexey Chernov has been the artistic director of the All-Russian Creative Association “A Look at the Present”. The main goal of the project is to draw close public attention to what is happening in academic music “here and now”, to support mature, already established musicians (composers and performers) and to give a wide range of listeners the opportunity to hear new, real serious music. The association organizes various events, including the STAM festival held at least once a year.
The key event of the STAM festival is the composers’ competition, where the winners are chosen by the public. Since 2017, the competition has been held six times under the leadership of Alexei Chernov, in 2020 it was held twice online.
Also, since 2020, the STAM festival has become one of the festivals of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. P. I. Tchaikovsky. As part of the STAM festival, Alexei Chernov promotes little-known Russian music, the festival has a dedication every year. Since 2017, STAM has been dedicated to M. Kollontay, as well as to the memory of Yu. Butsko, Yu. Krein, A. Karamanov, S. Feinberg and N. Golovanov.
