Albert Coates |

Born in Russia. Debut 1905 in Leipzig. After a number of years of work in German opera houses, in 1910-19 he was a conductor at the Mariinsky Theater, where he performed a number of outstanding productions: Khovanshchina (1911, director and performer of the part of Dosifey – Chaliapin), Elektra (1913, first production in Russian stage, directed by Meyerhold), etc.

From 1919 he lived in Great Britain. Performed at Covent Garden, Berlin. In 1926 he performed Boris Godunov at the Grand Opera (in the title role of Chaliapin). In 1927 in London he staged the opera Mozart and Salieri by Rimsky-Korsakov (also with the participation of Chaliapin). In 1930, he took part in the entrepyriza of Tsereteli and V. Basil in Paris (among the productions are Prince Igor, Sadko, and others). Toured in Russia in 1926-27. In 1946 Coates settled in South Africa. Author of a number of operas, including “Pickwick”, 1936, London, based on C. Dickens.
