Yulianna Avdeeva is one of the most successful young Russian pianists whose art is in demand at home and abroad. They started talking about her after her triumph at the XVI International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 2010, which opened the doors of the world’s best concert halls for the performer.
Immediately after the competition, Julianne was invited to perform jointly with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Alan Gilbert, the NHK Symphony Orchestra and Charles Duthoit. In subsequent seasons she has played with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra with Manfred Honeck at the conductor’s stand, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Vladimir Yurovsky, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Kent Nagano, the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin under Tugan Sokhiev, the Grand Symphony Orchestra named after P. I. Tchaikovsky under the direction of Vladimir Fedoseev. The solo performances of Yulianna Avdeeva, which take place in such halls as the Wigmore Hall and the Southbank Center in London, Gaveau in Paris, the Palace of Catalan Music in Barcelona, the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, are also a success with the public. and the Moscow International House of Music. The pianist is a participant in major music festivals: in the Rheingau in Germany, in La Roque d’Anthéron in France, “Faces of Modern Pianoism” in St. Petersburg, “Chopin and His Europe” in Warsaw. In the summer of 2017, she made her recital debut at the Ruhr Piano Festival and also at the Salzburg Festival, where she played with the Mozarteum Orchestra.
Critics note the high skill of the musician, the depth of concepts and the originality of interpretations. “An artist who can make a piano capable of singing” was how the British Gramophone magazine (2005) characterized her art. “She makes the music breathe,” wrote the Financial Times (2011), while the renowned magazine Piano News noted: “She plays with a sense of melancholy, fantasy and nobility” (2014).
Yuliana Avdeeva is a sought-after chamber musician. Her repertoire includes several programs in duet with the famous German violinist Julia Fischer. The pianist collaborates with the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra and its artistic director Gidon Kremer. They recently released a CD with Mieczysław Weinberg’s compositions.
Another sphere of the pianist’s musical interests is historical performance. So, on the piano Erard (Erard) in 1849, she recorded two concertos by Fryderyk Chopin, accompanied by the “Orchestra of the XNUMXth century” under the direction of the well-known expert in this field, Frans Bruggen.
In addition, the pianist’s discography includes three albums with works by Chopin, Schubert, Mozart, Liszt, Prokofiev, Bach (Mirare Productions label). In 2015, Deutsche Grammophon released a collection of recordings by the winners of the International Chopin Piano Competition from 1927 to 2010, which also includes recordings by Yuliana Avdeeva.
Yulianna Avdeeva began piano lessons at the Gnessin Moscow Secondary Special Music School, where Elena Ivanova was her teacher. She continued her education at the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music with Professor Vladimir Tropp and at the Higher School of Music and Theater in Zurich with Professor Konstantin Shcherbakov. The pianist trained at the International Piano Academy on Lake Como in Italy, where she was advised by such masters as Dmitry Bashkirov, William Grant Naboret and Fu Tsong.
The victory at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw was preceded by awards from ten international competitions, including the Artur Rubinstein Memorial Competition in Bydgoszcz (Poland, 2002), AMA Calabria in Lamezia Terme (Italy, 2002), piano competitions in Bremen (Germany, 2003) and Spanish composers in Las Rozas de Madrid (Spain, 2003), International Competition of Performers in Geneva (Switzerland, 2006).
