Justin Diaz
Native to Puerto Rico. Debut 1963 (Metropolitan Opera, Monterone in Rigoletto). Participated in the world premiere of Antony and Cleopatra by Barber at the Metropolitan Opera (1966, title role). In 1969 he performed the part of Mohammed II in Rossini’s The Siege of Corinth (La Scala). In 1974 he sang at the Metropolitan Opera as Procida in Verdi’s Sicilian Vespers. Since 1976 in Covent Garden (debut as Escamillo).
He played the role of Iago in the famous film-opera Othello (1986, directed by Zeffirelli). In 1992, the singer performed in Franchetti’s rarely performed opera Christopher Columbus (Miami). Recordings include Mohammed II (conductor Schippers, EMI), Nelusco in Meyerbeer’s African Woman (conductor Arena, LD, Pioneer).
