Franco Capuana
Italian conductor. He worked in the opera houses of Palermo, Genoa. In 1927 he staged the opera Turandot in Brescia. In 1930-37 he performed in Naples. In 1937-40 at La Scala. From 1946 he performed at Covent Garden. In 1949-51 chief conductor of La Scala. He expanded the theatre’s repertoire and staged operas by Janacek, Hindemith, Alfano and Malipiero. He performed works by Rossini (Moses in Egypt), Wagner and others. Among the last productions – Verdi’s Alzira (1967, Rome). Among the recordings are “Pirate” by Bellini (soloists Cappuccili, Caballe and others, Memories), “Werther” Massenet (soloists Tagliavini, Simionato and others, Bongiovanni), “Girl from the West” Puccini (soloists Tebaldi, Del Monaco, McNeil, Decca ).
