Matthew Halls
Matthew Halls has earned a reputation as one of the leading conductors of the younger generation by performing in prestigious concert halls around the world. In addition to the baroque and classical repertoire, in which the conductor became widely known, Halls seeks to expand his musical space through the orchestral and choral heritage of XNUMXth-century German composers and twentieth-century British masters, juxtaposing such disparate authors as Bach and Tippett, Bird and Britten.
In July 2011, Matthew Halls made his first appearance at the Oregon Bach Festival and made such a strong impression that he was immediately invited to succeed Helmut Rilling as the Festival’s Artistic Director.
As an opera conductor, Matthew Halls made his debuts at the Handel Festival in Hull, the Korean National Opera, the Salzburg Landestheater and the Central City Opera in Colorado. Collaboration with the Colorado Opera continued with productions of Handel’s Rinaldo and Amadis and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. At the Bavarian State Opera and the Netherlands Opera, the maestro presented Bellini’s Norma and Britten’s Peter Grimes.
Matthew Halls was educated at Oxford University and taught at his alma mater for five years. In continuation of his work at Oxford, he took over as Artistic Director of the King’s Concort and then founded the highly acclaimed Retrospect Ensemble in 2009, with whom he has produced several award-winning recordings. Enthusiastically working with young musicians, Matthew Halls constantly teaches at summer schools and conducts master classes.
