She began as a dramatic actress, making her debut in opera in 1941 (Aachen, the part of Octavian in the Rosenkavalier). After the war she worked in various German theaters, from 1951 in Covent Garden, in 1953-56 she sang at the Salzburg Festival (Donna Anna, Pamina in The Magic Flute). She was successful in the Wagner roles at the Bayreuth Festivals 1957-61 (parts of Eve in The Nuremberg Mastersingers, Elsa in Ohengrin, Gutruna in the opera The Death of the Gods). Since 1966 at the Metropolitan Opera. Among the parties are also Agatha in Weber’s Free Shooter, Countess Almaviva, Elektra in Mozart’s Idomeneo. The Salzburg production of Don Giovanni (1954) directed by Furtwängler with the participation of Grummer was recorded and became an event in the artistic life of those years. Other recordings include the role of Elizabeth in Tannhäuser (conducted by Konvichny, EMI).
