Bernd Alois Zimmermann |

German composer (Germany). Member of the West Berlin Academy of Arts (1965). Studied with G. Lemacher and F. Jarnach in Cologne, after the 2nd World War – at international summer courses in Darmstadt with W. Fortner and R. Leibovitz. In 1950-52 he taught music theory at the Institute of Musicology at the University of Cologne, from 1958 – composition at the Cologne Higher School of Music. One of the representatives of avant-garde.

Zimmerman is the author of the opera “Soldiers”, which has received great fame. Among the latest productions are performances in Dresden (1995) and Salzburg (2012).

Compositions:

opera Soldiers (Soldaten, 1960; 2nd ed. 1965, Cologne); ballets – Contrasts (Kontraste, Bielefeld, 1954), Alagoana (1955, Essen, originally a piece for orchestra, 1950), Perspectives (Perspektive, 1957, Düsseldorf), White Ballet (Ballet blanc …, 1968, Schwetzingen); cantata Praise nonsense (Lob der Torheit, after I. V. Goethe, 1948); symphony (1952; 2nd edition 1953) and other works, incl. Electonic music for the World Exhibition in Osaka (1970).
