One of the leading modern opera masters in Germany. Among the best operas are Lear (1978, libretto by K. Henneberg based on Shakespeare’s tragedy King Lear, successfully staged in Munich, in the title role of Fischer-Dieskau, dir. Ponnel), The Castle (1992, Berlin, libretto by the author after novel of the same name by F. Kafka). Rayman’s writings are distinguished by tragedy, complex symbolism. A number of his works are written on the plots of the writer A. Strindberg: “Game of Dreams” (1965), “Sonata of Ghosts” (1984).
