Alexey Rybnikov
Composer, People’s Artist of Russia Alexei Lvovich Rybnikov was born on July 17, 1945 in Moscow. His father was a violinist in the jazz orchestra of Alexander Tsfasman, his mother was an artist-designer. Rybnikov’s maternal ancestors were tsarist officers.
Alexei’s musical talent manifested itself from childhood: at the age of eight he wrote several piano pieces and music for the film “The Thief of Baghdad”, at the age of 11 he became the author of the ballet “Puss in Boots”.
In 1962, after graduating from the Central Music School at the Moscow Conservatory, he entered the Moscow P.I. Tchaikovsky in the composition class of Aram Khachaturian, from which he graduated with honors in 1967. In 1969 he completed postgraduate studies in the class of the same composer.
In 1964-1966, Rybnikov worked as an accompanist at GITIS, in 1966 he was the head of the musical part of the Drama and Comedy Theater.
In 1969-1975 he taught at the Moscow Conservatory at the Department of Composition.
In 1969 Rybnikov was admitted to the Union of Composers.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the composer wrote chamber works for pianoforte; concertos for violin, for string quartet and orchestra, for accordion and orchestra of Russian folk instruments, “Russian Overture” for symphony orchestra, etc.
Since 1965, Alexei Rybnikov has been creating music for films. His first experience was the short film “Lelka” (1966) directed by Pavel Arsenov. In 1979 he became a member of the Union of Cinematographers.
Rybnikov wrote music for more than a hundred films, including Treasure Island (1971), The Great Space Journey (1974), The Adventures of Pinocchio (1975), About Little Red Riding Hood (1977), You Never Dreamed of… “(1980), “The same Munchausen” (1981), “Original Russia” (1986).
He is the author of music for the cartoons “The Wolf and the Seven Kids in a New Way” (1975), “That’s how absent-minded” (1975), “The Black Hen” (1975), “The Feast of Disobedience” (1977), “Moomin and the Comet “(1978) and others.
In the 2000s, the composer wrote music for the documentary film Children from the Abyss (2000), the military drama Star (2002), the TV series Spas Under the Birches (2003), the comedy Hare Above the Abyss (2006), the melodrama “Passenger” (2008), military drama “Pop” (2009), children’s film “The Last Doll Game” (2010) and others.
Alexei Rybnikov is the author of music for the rock operas Juno and Avos and The Star and Death of Joaquin Murieta. The play “Juno and Avos”, staged to the music of Rybnikov at the Moscow Lenkom Theater in 1981, became an event in the cultural life of Moscow and the whole country, the theater repeatedly successfully toured with this performance abroad.
In 1988, Alexei Rybnikov founded the production and creative association “Modern Opera” under the Union of Composers of the USSR. In 1992, his musical mystery “Liturgy of the catechumens” was presented to the public here.
In 1998, Rybnikov wrote the ballet “Eternal Dances of Love” – a choreographic “journey” of a couple in love into the past and future.
In 1999, by a decree of the Moscow government, the Alexei Rybnikov Theater was created under the Committee for Culture of Moscow. In 2000, scenes from the composer’s new musical drama Maestro Massimo (Opera House) premiered.
In 2005, the composer’s Fifth Symphony “Resurrection of the Dead” for soloists, choir, organ and large symphony orchestra was performed for the first time. In the original composition, the music is intertwined with texts in four languages (Greek, Hebrew, Latin and Russian) taken from the books of the Old Testament prophets.
In the same year, the Alexei Rybnikov Theater presented the musical Pinocchio.
During the New Year holidays of 2006-2007, the Alexei Rybnikov Theater showed the premiere of the new show Little Red Riding Hood.
In 2007, the composer presented to the public two of his new works – Concerto Grosso “The Blue Bird” and “The Northern Sphinx”. In the fall of 2008, the Alexei Rybnikov Theater staged the rock opera The Star and Death of Joaquin Murieta.
In 2009, Alexey Rybnikov created an author’s version of the rock opera Juno and Avos especially for showing at the Pierre Cardin Festival in Lacoste.
In 2010, Alexei Rybnikov’s Symphony Concerto for cello and viola took place at the world premiere.
In the fall of 2012, the Alexei Rybnikov Theater premiered the play “Hallelujah of Love”, which included scenes from the most famous theatrical works of the composer, as well as several themes from popular films.
In December 2014, the Alexei Rybnikov Theater presented the premiere of the composer’s choreographic drama Through the Eyes of a Clown.
In 2015, the theater is preparing the premieres of Alexei Rybnikov’s new opera “War and Peace”, a revived production of the mystery opera “Liturgy of the Catechumens”, a children’s musical performance “The Wolf and the Seven Kids”.
Alexei Rybnikov is a member of the Patriarchal Council for Culture of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The composer’s work was marked by various awards. In 1999 he was awarded the title of People’s Artist of Russia. He was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation for 2002. Awarded the Order of Friendship (2006) and the Order of Honor (2010).
In 2005, the composer was awarded the Order of the Holy Blessed Prince Daniel of Moscow by the Russian Orthodox Church.
Among his cinematic awards are the Nika, Golden Aries, Golden Eagle, Kinotavr awards.
Rybnikov is a laureate of the Triumph Russian Prize for Encouragement of the Highest Achievements of Literature and Art (2007) and other public awards.
In 2010, he was awarded an honorary prize “For his contribution to the development of science, culture and art” of the Russian Authors’ Society (RAO).
Alexei Rybnikov is married. His daughter Anna is a film director, and his son Dmitry is a composer and musician.
