He started out as a bassoonist in musical theatre, making his debut in opera in 1975 (Stuttgart). In 1977 he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival (Fro in the Rheingold), later he performed on this stage the parts of Sigmund in the Valkyrie, Lohengrin, Parsifal. In 1978-80 he sang in Berlin. Since 1980 at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Lohengrin).
One of the most successful during these years was Max’s part in The Free Shooter (Hamburg, 1978). In 1986, he performed the role of Eric in Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman at Covent Garden. In 1995-96 he sang the part of Siegfried in the Chicago production of Der Ring des Nibelungen. Other roles include Tamino, Florestan in Fidelio, Lionel in Flotov’s March, Idomeneo in Mozart’s opera, Lensky.
Yeruzalem is one of the largest performers of the Wagner repertoire. Among the singer’s recordings are almost all operas by this composer, including the parts of Tristan (conductor Barenboim, Teldec), Lohengrin (conductor Abbado, Deutsche Grammophon), etc.
