From 1968 he worked at the Welsh National Opera (in 1973-86, musical director of this theater). In 1982 he made his debut at Covent Garden (“Billy Budd” Britten). The repertoire includes a number of works by Janáček. Since 1993 Music Director of Scottish Opera. Among the productions are Der Ring des Nibelungen (1986, Covent Garden).
