French by origin. She took a pseudonym from the city of Albany (where she began to sing in the church choir). Debut 1870 (Messina, Amina’s part in Bellini’s La Sonnambula). In 1872-96 she sang at Covent Garden, where she sang for the first time in England the parts of Elsa in Lohengrin and Elizabeth in Tannhäuser in 1875-76.
Her performance of Wagnerian roles was highly appreciated by her contemporaries. Toured in St. Petersburg (1873-74, 1877-79). From 1874 she performed frequently in the USA. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1891 as Gilda. Among other parties Margarita, Mignon in one. Opera by Thomas, Isolde, Desdemona and others. Left the stage in 1896. Author of a book of memoirs (1911). One of the greatest singers of her time.
