Christoph von Dohnanyi
The son of the largest Hungarian composer and conductor E. Dohnany (1877-1960). Acts as a conductor since 1952. Was chief conductor of opera houses in Lübeck (1957-63), Kassel (1963-66), Frankfurt am Main (1968-75), Hamburg Opera (1975-83). The first performer of a number of operas by Henze, Einem, F. Cerchi and others. In 1974 he made his debut at Covent Garden (Salome). Among the greatest achievements is the production of Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Vienna Opera (1992-93). He regularly participates in the Salzburg Festival (Everyone Does It So, 1993; The Magic Flute, 1997). Performed Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex in Paris (1996). Recordings include Salome (Deutsche Grammophon), Berg’s Wozzeck (soloists Wächter, Silja and others, Decca).
