He made his debut in 1939 (Pforzheim, Pinkerton part). After the war, he sang at the Stuttgart Opera House, where he performed until the end of his life (in 1972-74 he was the artistic director of this theater). Gained fame as the largest interpreter of Wagner’s parts (Tristan, Parsifal, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Sigmund in Valkyrie). He performed regularly at the Bayreuth Festival (1951-71). In 1955-56 he sang at Covent Garden (Tristan, Siegfried). In 1957 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera (Sigmund). Among other parts of Othello, Adolard in Weber’s Euryant. In 1970 Windgassen performed in San Francisco in Tristan und Isolde with Nilsson. Recordings include Florestan in Fidelio (conductor Furtwängler, EMI), Siegfried in Der Ring des Nibelungen (conductor Solti, Decca).
