Sergey Krylov was born in 1970 in Moscow into a family of musicians – the famous violin maker Alexander Krylov and pianist, teacher of the Central Music School at the Moscow Conservatory Lyudmila Krylova. He started playing the violin at the age of five, first appearing on the stage a year after the start of the lessons. He graduated from the Central Music School at the Moscow Conservatory, a student of Professor Sergei Kravchenko (among his teachers are also Volodar Bronin and Abram Stern). At the age of 10, he performed with an orchestra for the first time and soon began an intensive concert activity in Russia, China, Poland, Finland and Germany. By the age of sixteen, the violinist had several recordings for radio and television.
Since 1989 Sergey Krylov has been living in Cremona (Italy). After winning the International Violin Competition. R. Lipitzer, he continued his studies in Italy, at the Walter Stauffer Academy with the famous violinist and teacher Salvatore Accardo. He also won the first prize at the International Competition. A. Stradivari in Cremona and the International Competition. F. Kreisler in Vienna. In 1993 he was awarded the Chilean Critics’ Prize for the best foreign interpreter of classical music of the year.
The musical world of Sergei Krylov was opened by Mstislav Rostropovich, who said about his young colleague: “I believe that Sergei Krylov is among the top five violinists in the world today.” In turn, Krylov has repeatedly noted that the experience of communicating with a brilliant master significantly changed him as a musician: “I often miss Rostropovich’s calls and concerts with him.”
Sergey Krylov has performed at such prestigious venues as the Berlin and Munich Philharmonics, Musikverein and Konzerthaus halls in Vienna, Radio France Auditorium in Paris, Megaron in Athens, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, La Scala theater in Milan, and also at music festivals in Santander and Granada, at the Prague Spring festival. Among the orchestras with which the violinist collaborated: the Vienna Symphony, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Honored Orchestra of Russia, the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Russian National Orchestra, the New Russia State Symphony Orchestra, the Camerata Salzburg, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the Parma Filarmonica Toscanini , the State Philharmonic Orchestra of Hamburg, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ural Academic Philharmonic Orchestra and many others. He has performed under the baton of such conductors as Mstislav Rostropovich, Valery Gergiev, Yuri Temirkanov, Vladimir Ashkenazi, Yuri Bashmet, Dmitry Kitaenko, Saulius Sondeckis, Mikhail Pletnev, Andrei Boreiko, Vladimir Yurovsky, Dmitry Liss, Nicolas Luisotti, Yutaka Sado, Zoltan Kocisz, Günther Herbig and others.
Being a sought-after musician in the field of chamber music, Sergei Krylov has repeatedly performed in ensembles with such renowned performers as Yuri Bashmet, Maxim Vengerov, Misha Maisky, Denis Matsuev, Efim Bronfman, Bruno Canino, Mikhail Rud, Itamar Golan, Nobuko Imai, Elina Garancha, Lily Zilberstein.
Collaborated with Sting on a project dedicated to Schumann. The violinist’s discography includes albums (including 24 caprices by Paganini) for the recording companies EMI Classics, Agora and Melodiya.
In recent years, Sergei Krylov devotes a lot of time to teaching. Together with his pianist mother, he organized the musical academy Gradus ad Parnassum in Cremona. Among his students there are quite famous violinists (in particular, 20-year-old Eduard Zozo).
On January 1, 2009, Sergey Krylov took over as chief conductor of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, replacing the legendary Saulius Sondeckis.
Now the mega-demanded musician has a busy tour schedule, covering almost the entire world. In 2006, after a break of more than 15 years, the violinist performed at home, giving a concert in Yekaterinburg with the Ural Academic Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Dmitry Liss. Since then, the violinist has been a frequent and welcome guest in Russia. In particular, in September 2009, he participated in the Grand RNO Festival and the First International Festival of Master Classes “Glory to the Maestro!”, held by the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center in honor of Mstislav Rostropovich (together with Yuri Bashmet, David Geringas, Van Clyburn, Alexei Utkin , Arkady Shilkloper and Badri Maisuradze). On April 1, 2010, Sergey Krylov gave a concert with the English Chamber Orchestra as part of the First Moscow International Festival “Rostropovich’s Week”.
In the extensive repertoire of Sergei Krylov, in his words, “95 percent of all violin music. It’s easier to list what you haven’t played yet. Concertos by Bartok, Stravinsky, Berg, Nielsen – I’m just going to learn.
The virtuoso has collection Stradivari and Guadanini violins at his disposal, but in Russia he plays his father’s instrument.
Sergey Krylov has a rare hobby – he loves to fly an airplane and believes that there is a lot in common between driving an airplane and playing virtuoso violin pieces.
