He sang in 1940-47 at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre. Member of the Glyndebourne Festival since 1947. Sang in Covent Garden (also since 1947). The repertoire mainly includes operas by English composers (Britten, M. Williamson, and others). Participated in the world premieres of Peter Grimes, Lamentation of Lucretia, Albert Herring and Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. Other parts include Leporello, Bartolo, and Banquo in Macbeth.
