Born June 28, 1930 in Moscow. In 1953 he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in the composition class of V. Shebalin.

Author of the operas “Til Ulenspiegel” (1984) and “The Mystery of the Apostle Paul” (1986), 5 symphonies (1950-1961), a wind concerto (1965), vocal and chamber-instrumental works, oratorios “Julius Fucik” and ” Heroic Poem. He also wrote Eight Spiritual Songs in Memory of B. Pasternak (1989), Six Spiritual Songs (1993), the ballets Vanina Vanini (1962) and Little Tsakhes, Nicknamed Zinnober (based on Hoffmann’s fairy tale, 1968). The ballet “Geologists” was staged in 1959 to the music of the “Heroic Poem” (1964).

Nikolai Nikolaevich Karetnikov died in 1994 in Moscow.
