Mikhail Tatarnikov was educated at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory at the Faculty of Symphony and Opera Conducting (class of Alexander Polishchuk).

In 2006, he made his debut as a conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre: under his direction, the ballet Metaphysics was performed to the music of Prokofiev’s Second Symphony. In 2007, he conducted the first opera performance, a new production of Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges. Subsequently, a large number of opera performances and concerts were performed under his direction.

In addition, Mikhail Tatarnikov has performed as a conductor with the orchestras of the Turin Teatro Regio, the Stres Music Festival, the Novosibirsk Philharmonic, the St. Petersburg State Conservatory and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra; directed a gala concert with Jennifer Lairmore, made his debut with the Russian National Orchestra in Moscow, and was Valery Gergiev’s assistant during the performance of Wagner’s tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Metropolitan Opera.

In the 2009/2010 season Mikhail Tatarnikov actively performed at the Mariinsky Theatre, conducting opera performances and concerts, and also directed the Gevle Symphony Orchestra (Sweden), the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, made his debut in Germany at the opening of the Dresden Music Festival with the Russian National Orchestra, and then directed the play The Tales of Hoffmann at the Berlin Comic Opera.

Among the engagements of the 2010/2011 season. – performances with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, a gala concert in Verhaven (Holland) as part of the Gergiev Festival, as well as a new production of the opera Eugene Onegin at the Riga Opera. In the 2012/13 season Mikhail Tatarnikov plans to perform at La Scala, the Bordeaux Opera and the Bavarian Staatsoper.

Since January 1, 2012, Mikhail Tatarnikov has been the music director and chief conductor of the Mikhailovsky Theatre.
