He worked as a conductor at the Stanislavsky Opera Studio (1922-28), the Opera Theater. Stanislavsky (1928-41, intermittently), a number of seasons at the Mariinsky Theater, in 1951-57 at the Bolshoi Theater. Among the productions at the Bolshoi Theater: the opera “Sorochinsky Fair” by Mussorgsky (1952), “Werther” (1957). Author of a number of operas, including The Gadfly (1928, after E. Voynich), Thunderstorm (1941, after Ostrovsky).
