Debut 1949 (Ostrava, part of Katya Kabanova in Janáček’s opera of the same name). For a number of years she sang in Czechoslovakia (Bratislava, Prague). Since 1960 she has performed at the Deutsche Staatsoper (debut as Octavian in The Rosenkavalier). Since 1966 at Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Leonora in Beethoven’s Fidelio), she has repeatedly performed at the Bayreuth Festival. Gained fame as a performer of Wagnerian parts (Gutruna in The Death of the Gods, Isolde, Venus in Tannhäuser, Brunhilde in Der Ring des Nibelungen, etc.). The singer’s repertoire also includes roles in operas by R. Strauss (Marshalsha in The Rosenkavalier, Ariadne in the opera Ariadne auf Naxos).
