Debut 1964 (London, part of Mimi). From 1967 she sang at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre. Since 1969 in Covent Garden. 1st performer of the role of Denise in Tippett’s Labyrinth Garden (1970). The repertoire also includes roles in the opera by Henze, Penderecki. At the Metropolitan Opera since 1977 (debut as Musetta). She also sang the roles of Natasha Rostova, Salome and others. At the Bayreuth Festival in 1983 she performed the part of Gutruna in the opera The Death of the Gods. Among the performances of the last years are Odabella in Verdi’s Attila (1990, Covent Garden), Maria in Berg’s Wozzeck (1996, Leeds). Recordings include Lady Macbeth (dir. Pritchard, IMP), Amelia in Un ballo in maschera (dir. Karajan, DG) and others.
